Down town hospital has celebrated its 35th Anniversary from 2nd of February 2024 with various competitions among the staff and doctors of the hospital, a two day mega health mela which has ended with the 32nd down town Public Oration & Award function on 15th of February 2024 at ITA Machkhowa at 4 pm, Guwahati. On the 35th Anniversary function of down town hospital held at down town hospital Auditorium on 15th of February 2024 at 10 am, Padma Shri (Dr.) Surjya Kanta Hazarika, President of Asam Sahitya Sabha blessed the occasion as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the 65th Edition of down town Newsletter with Ms. Gariasi Dutta, Director of down town hospital and Dr. Manabendra Nayak, Deputy Medical Superintendant and Senior Consultant – Department of Medicine of down town hospital. Padma Shri (Dr.) Surjya Kanta Hazarika congratulated Dr. N.N. Dutta for providing 35 years of untiring services rendered to the people of North East Region. He also thanked Dr. N.N. Dutta and down town hospital for their noble initiative in organizing the much needed Public Oration for the people of our region from the last 35 years. He emphasized that every profession should have compassion, love and empathy towards every individual.

From the last 31 years, down town hospital organizes a Public Oration Programme to bring awareness among the general public on a common medical topic. Eminent personality from different medical field delivers the lecture to encourage the public for maintaining a healthy life. The oration started with the welcome address by Ms. Mayurakshi Dutta, Executive Director of down town hospital. On her speech she welcomed the guests and expressed her gratitude to the Orator and the Awardees. Dr. Udayan Barua, Medical Superintendant of down town hospital has briefed about organizing the Public Oration of down town hospital since 1993 and also introduced the Orator Dr. Purnendu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director, Genesis Group of Companies, Kolkata by Dr. Udayan Barua, Medical Superintendant.
The 32nd Public Oration was delivered by Dr. Purnendu Roy on Patient Safety. Dr. Roy has urged all medical professionals across the country to prioritize patient safety. Dr. Roy emphasized the importance of establishing protocols for all personnel involved in patient care, including doctors, nurses, and supporting staff. He stressed the need for timely medication administration and adherence to proper procedures for every patient admitted to hospitals. To ensure patient safety, Dr. Roy emphasized several key measures, including thorough documentation checks before medication administration, adherence to surgical protocols and rigorous disinfection of operating room equipment. Dr. N. N. Dutta expressed gratitude to Dr. Roy for highlighting the importance of patient safety. He affirmed that down town hospital is committed to providing medical services in strict accordance with established protocols and regulations, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety. In order to uplift the spirit of the doctors and to encourage them to continue their dedicated services to the community, the hospital has instituted an Annual “Award of Excellence in Medicine” since 2000, for the doctors of North East Region for setting exemplary service within and outside the state. This year down town “Award for Excellence in Medicine – 2024” was conferred upon Dr. Manabendra Nayak, Consultant & HOD- Department of General Medicine, down town hospital. The award carried a citation, a Gold medal, a memento and a cheque of Rupees One Lakh. Further in memory of Prof. Jogesh Mahanta & Prof. Pratul Goswami for their immense contribution in the upliftment of the hospital, two Awards have been instituted to honour distinguished doctors who have worked profoundly for the growth of the society in health care sector. For 2024, Prof. Jogesh Mahanta Memorial Award has been conferred upon Dr. Sarbeswar Bhuyan, Professor – Department of General Surgery, Assam Medical college and hospital and Prof. Pratul Goswami Memorial Award to Dr. Mauchumi Saikia Pathak, Professor & HOD- Department of Biochemistry, GMCH. These awards carried a citation and a memento. Ms. Fiona Goswami, daughter of Late Prof. Pratul Goswami has presented a cheque of Rs. 10,000/- to the awardee of the Prof. Pratul Goswami Memorial Award. The awards were given by Dr. N. N. Dutta, Chairman & Managing Director, down town hospital Dr. B. K. Gogoi, Medical Director, Prof. Bandana Dutta, Whole Time Director, Dr. Udayan Barua, Medical Superintendant, Ms. Mayurakshi Dutta, Executive Director, Ms. Gariasi Dutta, Director, down town hospital and Mr. Joutishman Dutta, Director, down town hospital.
