A BSF jawan commits suicide at the Sabroom border outpost in Tripura

A pall of gloom has descended on the Border Security Force (BSF) fraternity after a jawan allegedly took his own life while on duty along the India-Bangladesh border in South Tripura district on Sunday evening. The incident took place at the Merupara Border Outpost (BOP) under the Sabroom subdivision, close to the international boundary.

The deceased jawan has been identified as Constable Ugra Ram, a native of Rajasthan, who was serving with the 121st Battalion of the BSF. According to initial reports, the 32-year-old constable was on duty when he suddenly turned his service weapon — an INSAS rifle — on himself and fired a fatal shot to the head. The sudden sound of gunfire startled his colleagues, who rushed to the spot only to find him lying in a pool of blood.

Senior BSF officials immediately informed the local authorities. A police team from Manubazar police station along with personnel from the Srinagar outpost rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. Later, a specialized BSF team also joined the probe to gather forensic evidence.

Though the BSF is yet to issue an official statement, preliminary information from police sources suggests that domestic disputes and family-related stress might have been a major factor behind the tragic step. “While nothing conclusive can be said at this stage, the early assessment indicates severe family unrest as the possible trigger. The matter is still under investigation,” a police official familiar with the case said.
