Clearing the air, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said a cyclonic storm is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal (BOB).
IMD Director General (DG) Mrityunjay Mohapatra today said there is a consensus on the formation of a depression and its intensity in a cyclone between May 9.
According to Mohapatra, the frequency of cyclones and depressions is maximum during the summer season. According to the latest observations, a cyclone is likely to form in the Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6, 2023.
Due to this, a low-pressure area is likely to form in the same area around May 7. It is very likely to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 8, 2023.
“After that, there is a good chance that it will intensify as it moves almost northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal.” On May 9, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm,” the IMD DG said.
According to Mohapatra, it will initially move almost northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal.
“We have not specified its path and intensity and the area over land where it is likely to hit. Once the depression forms, we will provide a detailed forecast of landfall and its intensity. As of now, there is no such forecast for landfall on the Indian coast,” said Mahapatra.
