After Woman’s Killing in Aizawl, Mob Burns Murder Accused’s Under-Construction Home

Angry mobs in Mizoram’s capital recently set fire to the under-construction house of a man accused in a high-profile murder case, igniting significant unrest. The 62-year-old suspect, who allegedly died by suicide last month, was named as the prime suspect in the murder of a 26-year-old woman found dead on December 1 of last year. The arson incident occurred in the Tanhril locality on Tuesday night, shortly after police reported they had solved the murder case after extensive investigation. Following the announcement, community members demanded the family’s departure from the area, leading to the protestors setting ablaze another multi-storey building belonging to the accused. Aizawl SP Zosangliana noted that police intervened to control the chaos, evacuating the accused’s family for their safety. The mob eventually dispersed around 1 am Wednesday after officials urged calm. Local leaders called for the accused’s wife and children to leave the area permanently. The murder had come to light after the body of the woman was discovered near the Mizoram University campus. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation to avert further disturbances.
