Mizoram’s UD&PA Minister K. Sapdanga inaugurated the state’s first Common Bio Medical Waste Treatment Plant at Tuirial on Wednesday. The project, costing Rs. 9.71 crore, marks a significant advancement in Mizoram’s healthcare infrastructure. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, contributed Rs. 2 crore to the project, which falls under the Aizawl Smart City Ltd initiative in collaboration with the Mizoram Pollution Control Board. Constructed within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation Solid Waste Management Centre, the plant adheres to the Bio Medical Waste Management Rules 2016.
This facility will serve hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities across five districts: Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Serchhip, and Saitual. A specialized waste truck will collect medical waste from these districts for treatment at the plant, ensuring safe disposal. Aizawl Smart City Ltd will conduct a two-month trial run within the AMC area, while the Health & Family Welfare Department will oversee a similar trial in Saitual district.
The treatment plant is equipped to handle various types of medical waste management, including hazardous and infectious waste incineration, sterilization, and water and chemical air treatment. The facility also includes a special garbage collection system and a 250KVA generator to ensure uninterrupted operation during power outages.
