AM/NS India becomes first integrated steelmaker to get green steel certification

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become the country’s first integrated steel producer to receive Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly notified Green Steel Taxonomy. The certification covers the company’s flat steel products, with Hot Rolled (HR) coils and sheets earning a four-star rating and Cold Rolled (CR) coils and sheets receiving a three-star rating.

The certified products, widely used in the automotive, infrastructure, defence, construction equipment and consumer durables sectors, are now officially recognised as government-certified Green Steel. This enables downstream users to lower Scope 3 emissions across their value chains. Certification eligibility is based on emissions intensity, with steel produced below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel qualifying for star ratings under the new framework.

AM/NS India secured the certification after a detailed audit by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology, which validated the emissions performance of its flagship flat steel portfolio. The company’s lower-carbon profile is supported by its steelmaking mix, with about 65 per cent of capacity based on the Direct Reduced Iron route using natural gas, contributing to a more than 35 per cent reduction in emissions intensity since 2015.
