AM/NS India wins top innovation award at NECA 2025, boosts energy efficiency drive

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has won the prestigious Best Innovator Award at the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025 for its efforts in improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in steelmaking. The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The recognition was given for the Steel Making Plant-2 (SMP-2) project at the company’s Hazira plant in Gujarat.

According to the company, the project achieved a 10 per cent reduction in furnace electrical energy use by improving control systems in its CONARC furnace. This has resulted in annual power savings of over 56,400 megawatt-hours and a reduction of around 41,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. In Kolkata, such innovations are important as eastern India remains a major hub for steel consumption, infrastructure projects and industrial growth. Energy-efficient steel production can help stabilise supply and reduce environmental impact in the long run.

AM/NS India said the award strengthens its commitment to sustainable manufacturing and aligns with India’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
