The All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) has sought the intervention of the Arunachal Pradesh chief minister for the immediate restoration of the Itanagar (Ganga)-Jullang road, which has remained closed for nearly two years, causing difficulties for residents and daily commuters.
In a representation submitted to the chief minister, the ANSU expressed concern over the prolonged closure of the road and urged the state government to direct the department concerned to begin restoration work immediately. The union also demanded that the road be reopened for public use within a week.
The ANSU said the Ganga-Jullang road is an important alternative bypass route in the capital region and is used by residents, government employees, students and daily commuters for regular connectivity.
According to the union, the continued closure of the road has forced commuters to take the Jullang-Chimpu route, resulting in longer travel time and inconvenience for people travelling to and from Jullang and adjoining areas.
“The prolonged closure of such an important public road cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely,” the ANSU said.
The union stated that a portion of the road near the NES secretariat was washed away during heavy monsoon rainfall. Following the damage, the affected stretch was closed to traffic and has remained inaccessible for nearly two years.
Residents of Jullang and nearby areas have repeatedly urged the Public Works Department to carry out restoration work, the ANSU said, adding that the continued delay has led to growing frustration among those affected by the road closure.
The students’ body also pointed out that the Ganga-Jullang road has remained vulnerable to damage during the monsoon season.
It recalled that in 2020, a portion of a culvert and around 100 metres of the road were washed away following heavy rainfall, forcing the closure of the route for several months.
The ANSU said the repeated damage highlighted the need for a long-term solution rather than temporary repair work.
“Such recurring damage dearly necessitates not merely temporary repairs but a permanent and technically sound restoration and protection mechanism,” the union stated.
It demanded that the restoration work include proper drainage arrangements, culvert protection, retaining structures and other necessary engineering measures to reduce the risk of similar damage during future monsoon seasons.
The union has urged the chief minister to intervene and ensure that the concerned department takes immediate steps to restore the road and reopen it for public use.
The ANSU further warned that if no tangible action is initiated within a week, it would be compelled to resort to “necessary democratic and constitutional means of agitation” in the larger public interest.
