AOI in Imphal successfully saved a 50-year-old woman from metastatic breast cancer

The American Oncology Institute in Imphal successfully saved a 50-year-old woman from metastatic breast cancer, showcasing the innovative cancer care available at the institute, under the expert guidance of Dr. Brig A.K. Dhar and Dr. Shibashish Bhattacharayya.

A triple-positive breast cancer patient underwent right breast conservation surgery in 2013 and was treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy. Four months ago, bilateral lumps resurfaced, and a PET-CT scan revealed widespread metastasis. Dr. Brig A.K. Dhar devised a comprehensive treatment plan, including standard chemotherapy and targeted therapy, and specialized bone treatment. However, a few months into treatment, the patient experienced a resurgence of bilateral breast masses and nipple discharge.

The patient’s condition remains a concern. A subsequent PET-CT scan revealed disease progression. At this critical juncture, Dr Shibashish Bhattacharayya introduced an innovative approach, employing cytotoxic chemotherapy in conjunction with targeted therapy—a pioneering treatment offered for the first time in Manipur. The patient underwent six cycles of this therapy with exceptional results. Dr Shibashish Bhattacharayya,Medical Oncologist, AOI Imphal explaining the treatment stated, “This remarkable success reflects the ever-evolving landscape of medical innovation and highlights our commitment to delivering pioneering healthcare solutions to our patients.”
