ArcelorMittalpowers up 1GW renewable project in India, fuels green steel push

ArcelorMittal has kickstarted power generation from its largest renewable energy venture—a $0.7 billion, 1GW solar and wind hybrid project in Andhra Pradesh—marking a major milestone in India’s green industrial transformation. The clean energy will support AM/NS India, ArcelorMittal’s 60:40 joint venture with Nippon Steel, by supplying over 20% of the energy needs of its Hazira steel plant in Gujarat.

Developed by AM Green Energy, a wholly owned ArcelorMittal subsidiary, the project is designed to slash AM/NS India’s carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually. The hybrid setup includes 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines, collectively producing 2.5 billion kWh per year—enough to power nearly 10 million Indian homes. A hydro pumped storage solution, currently undergoing tests, will ensure 250MW of uninterrupted, round-the-clock power by June 2025.

In Kolkata, industry experts say the move is being closely watched by local steel and manufacturing sectors, which are increasingly under pressure to adopt cleaner production models. Stakeholders anticipate ripple effects in the eastern corridor’s steel ecosystem, potentially driving demand for green power solutions and technology partnerships. This India-first commissioning is part of ArcelorMittal’s 2.3GW global renewables pipeline across India, Brazil, and Argentina, expected to generate an additional $1.9 billion in annual EBITDA by 2027.
