Army-Led Pilgrimage Expedition Planned for Topo Gonov Peak in Arunachal Pradesh

The Indian Army is set to organize a pilgrimage to Topo Gonov peak, also known as Topo Gone, situated along the McMahon Line in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi district, marking a significant collaboration aimed at preserving cultural heritage, promoting spiritual practices, and enhancing national security. The pilgrimage, slated for January 19–24, 2026, is a partnership with the Galo Welfare Society (GWS), as stated by a Defence Ministry spokesperson.

Topo Gonov, rising to 2,900 meters, holds great reverence in Galo mythology as a sacred sanctuary for prayers and traditional ceremonies, but its challenging terrain has made it largely inaccessible. The Indian Army has committed to ensuring that the pilgrimage proceeds under safe and dignified conditions, with robust logistical support. Moi Bagra, chairman of GWS Research and Documentation, emphasized the historical importance of Topo Gonov as a critical ancestral landmark that symbolizes the resilience and heritage of the Galo people. Priest Mogi Ori also highlighted the pilgrimage’s spiritual role in reconnecting the community with a once-remote spiritual meridian.

Moreover, discussions have included the enhancement of tourism infrastructure, bolstering national security and territorial integrity, as well as facilitating civilian access to the area through initiatives by the Defence and Home Ministry. This pilgrimage not only aims to spotlight cultural and spiritual richness but also underscores the strategic significance of the region.
