Assam Cabinet approves development council for ‘Kiran Sheikh’ community

Assam’s Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved several significant measures during a meeting, announced Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. One of the notable decisions was the establishment of a development council for the Kiran Sheikh community residing in the Barak Valley, fulfilling a long-standing demand. Minister Baruah emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting various communities by approving such development councils.

Additionally, the Cabinet sanctioned the utilization of the Meitei script for primary level education in Manipuri language schools, aiming to enhance educational accessibility and inclusivity. Furthermore, Minister Baruah disclosed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to virtually inaugurate a semiconductor unit at Jagiroad on March 13. The Industry, Commerce, and Public Enterprise Department of the state have been entrusted with facilitating the necessary clearances for this project, spearheaded by the Tata Group.

The Cabinet also provided administrative approval for various projects, including a water supply scheme in Jorhat town, the construction of Karimganj Medical College, the beautification of Rang Ghar, and the development of the Amingaon sports complex. Moreover, the Cabinet approved extending a sovereign guarantee to a bank for the establishment of 1,000 MW solar plants in the state, highlighting Assam’s commitment to renewable energy initiatives.
