Assam Government approved the merger of four districts

On Saturday, four districts were merged with the approval of the Assam Government. These districts were too curved out in recent years originally.

According to the sources, before the Election Commission’s ban on any new administrative unit in Assam from January 1 until the completion of the delimitation exercise these districts were merged.

The EC announced the delimitation process of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Assam on December 27. The EC had said that the delimitation of the 14 Lok Sabha and 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam would be based on the Census data from 2001.

Before the merger the state had 35 districts.

After the Cabinet approval, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Biswanath district will be merged with Sonitpur, the Hojai district with Nagaon, the Bajali district with Barpeta, and the Tamulpur district with Baksa.

Sarma also added in his statement that this decision is not permanent.
