Assam–Walmart Vriddhi pact seen as catalyst for MSME digitisation and market expansion

In a move with significant economic implications, Walmart Vriddhi, through its programme partner Ideas to Impact Foundation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprises, Government of Assam, to accelerate growth and digital transformation of the state’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The agreement aligns with Walmart Vriddhi’s national target of empowering an additional 100,000 MSMEs in India by 2028. The programme will offer free-of-cost training, mentoring and business tools to help enterprises modernise operations and integrate into eCommerce platforms, including Flipkart. The Assam government will facilitate statewide outreach through District Industries Centres, strengthening institutional support and improving ecosystem depth.

The intervention will prioritise sectors with high employment multipliers such as bamboo, cane, handloom and food processing. Initial rollout will cover Kamrup, Sonitpur, Cachar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Jorhat. Commissioner M.N. Dahal highlighted enhanced access to markets and technology as key outcomes, while Jason Fremstad of Walmart International underscored competitiveness and scale. Launched in 2019, Walmart Vriddhi has trained over 70,000 MSMEs across India.
