Assamese traditional “Gamosa” gets Geographical Indication tag

The Assamese traditional “Gamosa” is honored by the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indication (GIs) Registry.

According to sources, Assam got its recognition five years after the state’s Department of Handlooms and Textiles demanded it.

“A day of pride for Assam, as our #Gamosa gets aGeographical Indication Tag by the government of India. Grateful to Hon PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for always giving a place of prestige to this integral symbol of Assamese glory. Congratulation Assam,” CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

“Gamosa of Assam is becoming famous in the world. Geographical Indication tag will boost the confidence of the weavers,” tweeted textiles minister Piyush Goyal.

Gamosa became the 10th product or product from Assam to get the GI tag, taking India’s total number of GI tags to 432.
