The Utah Hockey Club, which relocated from Phoenix to Utah before the 2024-25 NHL season, has encountered a significant hurdle in its rebranding efforts. Their preferred name, Utah Yetis, was rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office due to potential confusion with the Yeti cooler brand. Despite extensive negotiations for a co-existence agreement, the attempts were unsuccessful.
The delay in appealing the trademark rejection would impede the timely launch of branded merchandise, leading the club to abandon the Yeti name. Consequently, the organization has narrowed down its name choices to three alternatives: Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth, and Utah Wasatch. Fans attending the next four home games at the Delta Center will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred name using iPads, with confidentiality measures in place during the voting process.
