Bajaj Finserv Board Approves Reinsurance Venture, Awaits Regulatory Nod

Bajaj Finserv has announced its entry into India’s reinsurance sector, with its board approving the move subject to approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). The development makes Bajaj Finserv the third private-sector player in nearly a year to announce plans to enter the domestic reinsurance market, which has traditionally been dominated by state-owned General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re).

The move comes amid growing interest in India’s reinsurance industry, driven by rising insurance demand, regulatory reforms, economic expansion and efforts to strengthen domestic risk management capacity. In March 2025, Valueattics Re became the first private-sector reinsurer to enter the market, followed by Allianz-Jio Reinsurance, which received regulatory approval earlier this year to begin operations.

Industry experts believe the entry of new players will increase competition, encourage innovation and help retain more risk and insurance premiums within the country. Sources indicate that additional companies may also enter the sector in the near future, further expanding the reinsurance ecosystem.

The growth of private participation is expected to support India’s long-term insurance development by improving underwriting capacity, enhancing risk solutions and providing greater opportunities for businesses and policyholders. With Bajaj Finserv’s proposed entry, the country’s reinsurance market is set to witness increased activity and competition after decades of limited private participation.
