Bangladesh Begins First Offshore Wind Power Project in Bay of Bengal

In a significant renewable energy milestone, Bangladesh has inaugurated its first offshore wind energy project in the Bay of Bengal, near Cox’s Bazar. The pilot project is expected to generate 100 MW of electricity, with potential expansion based on its success.

Funded in part by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, the project aligns with Bangladesh’s plan to achieve 40% renewable energy by 2041. Engineers from India and Denmark are collaborating with local teams on the installation and turbine design.

This effort holds regional importance, as West Bengal’s coastal districts may benefit from technology-sharing and green energy trade. Energy analysts in Kolkata suggest that a transnational wind corridor could emerge if more countries follow suit.
