Bangladesh Launches Coastal Evacuation Plan as Monsoon Intensifies

Bangladesh has activated a new community-based evacuation protocol for its vulnerable coastal districts, as monsoon rains intensify and forecasts indicate the possibility of cyclonic formations in the Bay of Bengal later this month.

The Ministry of Disaster Management confirmed that shelters in Khulna, Barisal, and Chattogram divisions are being readied to accommodate over 1.5 million people if needed. Local volunteers are being trained to coordinate relief work, and special attention is being given to vulnerable groups, including the elderly and disabled.

India’s eastern coastal regions are also on high alert. The cross-border collaboration on early warning systems between India and Bangladesh continues under the SAARC Disaster Management Centre framework.
