Bangladesh Launches First Fully Electric Ferry Service

Bangladesh has launched its first fully electric ferry service on the Dhaka–Narshingdi route, marking a significant step toward sustainable transportation. The eco-friendly project, developed in partnership with a Norwegian marine technology firm, aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

The ferries are powered by lithium-ion batteries and can carry up to 200 passengers. They are expected to cut fuel costs by 60% and reduce operational noise pollution significantly.

Transport Minister Obaidul Quader hailed the initiative as part of Bangladesh’s broader climate action strategy, aligning with global goals for green energy transition.

Environmental experts from India have praised the move, suggesting similar collaborations could benefit Kolkata and Guwahati’s river transport systems.
