Bangladesh Secures Japanese Investment for High-Speed Rail Between Dhaka and Chattogram

Bangladesh has signed a landmark agreement with Japan to construct a high-speed bullet train line connecting Dhaka and Chattogram, cutting travel time to just under 1 hour.

Funded largely through a soft loan from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), the project is expected to start construction in 2026 and be operational by 2031. The 227 km corridor will be the first of its kind in South Asia.

Regional transport analysts in India and Nepal are watching the project as a game-changing model for subcontinental high-speed rail infrastructure, particularly along trade-heavy corridors.
