Bangladesh Sets Up First Deep-Sea Port at Matarbari

Bangladesh has begun operations at its first deep-sea port in Matarbari, Cox’s Bazar, marking a major milestone in its maritime trade infrastructure. Built with Japanese funding, the port will accommodate large container ships and reduce dependency on regional transshipment hubs.

Officials say the port is expected to reduce shipping costs by 30% and increase export volume. The development could shift logistics patterns in South Asia, offering Indian northeastern states and Bhutan an alternative sea access point through integrated road-rail connectivity.
