Bangladesh’s Matarbari Deep-Sea Port Project Gains Pace

Construction of Bangladesh’s Matarbari Deep-Sea Port is progressing steadily, with Japanese support under the JICA framework. The port, located in Cox’s Bazar district, is being hailed as a future logistics hub for the Bay of Bengal.

Officials confirmed that dredging and container terminal foundations are 60% complete. Once operational by 2027, the port will handle large vessels that currently bypass Bangladesh for Indian or Sri Lankan ports.

This development is also seen as strategically important for Indian northeastern states, including Tripura and Assam, which could use Matarbari for international cargo access, creating an Indo-Bangla regional trade corridor.
