Bombay HC to pronounce order on Arnab Goswami’s bail plea in suicide abetment case today

The Bombay High Court is pronouncing today its order on the bail plea moved by Republic TV Editor-in-Chief, Arnab Goswami following his arrest in a 2018 case concerning the suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother.

The case was closed after the police filed an “A Summary” report in 2019, citing insufficient evidence to proceed against the accused which includes Goswami and two others. Earlier this year, the Maharashtra Government re-opened investigation in the case.

Goswami and others were arrested last week. After his production before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alibaug, Goswami was remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody.

All three accused have challenged the re-investigation in the case before the Bombay High Court. Also before the High Court is Adnya Naik, Anvay Naik’s daughter, who has challenged the 2019 closure of the case and sought re-investigation.

The Bench of Justices SS Shinde and MS Karnik had reserved orders in the matter after a marathon hearing conducted on Saturday with the consent of all parties. The Court, thereafter, intimated that it would pronounce orders on the bail plea moved before it today.

After his arrest from his Lower Parel residence in Mumbai, Goswami was taken to Alibaug, where the Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded him and the two others in judicial custody till November 18.

Goswami is currently kept at a local school which has been designated as a COVID-19 centre for the Alibaug prison.
