BSF alleged to have tortured Mizo man at Indo-Bangladesh border

The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a prominent student body, has accused the Border Security Force (BSF) of physically assaulting a Mizo man, Zirsangliana, near the Indo-Bangladesh border. In a press release, the MZP alleged that personnel from the 20 Bn. BSF, stationed at B.O.P Crocodile, tortured Zirsangliana on August 5 after he reportedly crossed into Bangladesh to visit relatives.

The student body further claimed that the Mizoram police refused to register a complaint against the BSF, condemning the actions of both the security force and the local police. However, Lawngtlai SP Lokeshwaran clarified that Zirsangliana was handed over to Vasai Police Station by the BSF, and no FIR was filed by any party. He noted that no charges were brought against Zirsangliana, as he is an Indian citizen.

An unnamed BSF official refuted the torture allegations, stating that Zirsangliana had already sustained injuries before being apprehended. According to the official, Zirsangliana admitted to falling off a cliff while returning from Bangladesh. The BSF also claimed that Zirsangliana, allegedly involved in smuggling members of the Bawm community into Mizoram, fled upon spotting BSF patrols and injured himself further during the escape.
