Centre approves ₹6,487 crore to electrify 13.59 lakh households under RDSS

The government has approved Rs 6,487 crore in projects under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to electrify 13.59 lakh households across the country, the Parliament was informed. Shripad Yesso Naik, the Minister of State for Power, stated in a written response to a Rajya Sabha question that the action is intended to guarantee that every family, even in the most distant areas, has access to power. The RDSS concentrates on covering homes that are left out.

PM-JANMAN’s Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) families, Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA)’s tribal households, PM-AJAY’s Scheduled Caste families, and the Vibrant Village Program’s remote and bordering households are among them. The government is encouraging renewable energy options in addition to grid connections. As of June 30, projects totaling Rs 50 crore have been approved under the New Solar Electricity Scheme to supply 9,961 people with off-grid solar electricity. This follows the October 2017 introduction of the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), which was a huge success.

On March 31, 2022, the initiative came to an end after providing electricity to almost 2.86 crore households across India. Uttar Pradesh set the standard because 91.8 lakh homes were electrified. Madhya Pradesh (19.8 lakh), Rajasthan (21.2 lakh), and Odisha (24.5 lakh) all made impressive strides, with Bihar coming in second with 32.5 lakh. Significant progress was also made by smaller states; Sikkim electrified 14,900 households, Mizoram 27,970, and Himachal Pradesh 12,891, guaranteeing that even the most isolated hilly areas were covered.
