Centre warns about fake versions of liver medicine & cancer drug as WHO issues alerts

The Central Drug Standards Control Organisation has flagged two drugs — anti-cancer adcetris injection and liver drug Defitelio — for multiple counterfeit versions following who warnings and asked state drug regulators to monitor their sales and distribution.

The Drug Controller Advisory issued a safety alert this week that identified multiple fake versions of Adcetris injection 50 mg manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co Ltd and in four countries, including India.

“These products are often available at the patient level and are distributed in unregulated supply chains (mainly online). Products have been identified in both controlled and illicit supply chains, sometimes even at the patient level. WHO has reported that fake versions of at least eight different batch numbers are in circulation,” CDSCO informed.

On September 4, the WHO issued a medical product warning that it referred to a false batch of defibrillators (defibrified sodium).
“This counterfeit product was detected in India (April) and Turkiye (July) and was supplied outside regulated and authorized channels,” WHO said.
