Christmas community feasts across Mizoram were marked by joy, tradition, and a commitment to sustainability as churches embraced eco-friendly practices this year. From the early hours, church members came together to prepare a variety of dishes for the much-anticipated feasts. Children were treated to special festive programs, while provisions were made for elderly and physically challenged individuals unable to attend. Family members could register at designated counters to collect free meals on their behalf, ensuring no one missed out on the celebration.
In a significant move towards environmental consciousness, most churches heeded the Mizoram Pollution Control Board’s appeal to avoid disposable plastics. They opted for sustainable alternatives such as paper cups, steel plates, and even traditional banana leaves for serving food.
The shift to eco-friendly practices reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues within the community. “It’s heartening to see our celebrations align with the spirit of stewardship for the Earth,” said a church elder.
