The Nagaland government has released Rs. 70 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to provide immediate relief to families affected by the devastating landslides and flash floods that struck Mon district on July 19 and 20, claiming nine lives and causing widespread destruction.
In a statement, Mon Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Wennyei Konyak, said the financial assistance would be used to provide ex-gratia compensation to the families of those who lost their lives, gratuitous relief to the injured and immediate support for people whose houses were damaged in the disaster.
The deputy commissioner also said that Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, during his visit to the affected areas on July 20, had extended an additional Rs. 10 lakh to support civil society organisations, the District Hospital and local volunteers assisting the government in search and rescue operations.
The disaster, triggered by continuous monsoon rain, claimed nine lives, injured several people and caused extensive damage to houses, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure across Mon district.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Konyak assured that the district administration would continue to stand with every affected family during the recovery process.
He said the district administration, working in coordination with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, district police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 42 Assam Rifles, the Territorial Army, various line departments, village and ward councils, the Konyak Union, KNSK, KSU and local volunteers, is continuing search and rescue operations, damage assessment, relief distribution and restoration of essential services.
The deputy commissioner also acknowledged the efforts of government departments, security forces, volunteers and local communities for their prompt response and commitment during the emergency.
