Cognizant has achieved a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for organizing the world’s largest online generative AI hackathon. The company brought together 53,199 associates from 40 countries, generating 30,601 working prototypes over a ten-day global event called Vibe Coding. The initiative, described as a rehearsal for the future of work, encouraged employees across functions—HR, finance, legal, engineering, and marketing—to experiment with AI-driven software creation. Tools from partners such as GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Cursor, Lovable, and Gemini Code Assist enabled participants to design applications by simply describing their intent in natural language.
Industry leaders hailed the event as a step toward democratizing innovation. Ravi Kumar S., CEO of Cognizant, said, “This initiative isn’t just about setting a world record, it’s about setting the pace for the AI economy.”
In Kolkata, market watchers noted the significance of Cognizant’s achievement for the city’s thriving IT services ecosystem. The hackathon, they said, highlights Kolkata’s growing role as a hub for AI-driven talent, where software professionals are increasingly adopting AI-assisted workflows to keep pace with global trends. The event also reinforced Cognizant’s $1 billion commitment to AI investments and its Synapse program, which aims to upskill one million people in digital and AI skills by 2026.
