The Aizawl Bench of Gauhati High Court on Friday dismissed a petition filed by the All Mizoram Village Council Association (AMVCA) challenging the Mizoram government’s decision to curtail the term of Village Councils (VCs) by six months.
In two notifications issued in November 2024, the Mizoram government had shortened the VC term, setting it to end on February 19, 2025. AMVCA president K Lalngaizuala and another leader moved the court, arguing that the government had not provided specific reasons for the decision and that it infringed on their rights. owever, Justice Nelson Sailo, in his ruling, found the petition without merit and upheld the government’s order. “The petitioners have no legitimate grievance, and there is no need for further discussion. The writ petition is dismissed,” the court stated.
Meanwhile, elections for 544 village councils in nine districts, excluding three autonomous district councils, and 111 local councils (LCs) within Aizawl and Lunglei municipal areas, are set for February 12. A total of 6,829 candidates are contesting for VC seats, while 2,076 candidates are in the fray for LCs. Counting will begin at 7 PM or immediately after polling ends.
