COVID-19 virus can impact heart functions and heart health

Dr Rituparna Baruah, Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Guwahati, strongly recommended all heart patients who tested Covid-19 positive to seek heart check-ups post-recovery to rule out or treat any side-effects that may have been caused by the virus. In severe cases or delayed diagnosis, poor heart health induced due to COVID-19 may also become a probable cause for Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the future. While millions of patients are recovering from COVID-19, the heart patients amongst them need to be extra careful.

“Heart patients who have tested positive need to be cautious as COVID-19 has been observed to cause severe symptoms and worse outcomes in heart patients or individuals with cardiovascular disease. A complete diagnosis post COVID-19 recovery is extremely advisable to help tackle fatalities like Heart Failure or Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This is the time for everyone to pay attention to their heart health and over-all well-being. Since outdoor physical activity is limited, ensure some form of indoor exercise to keep yourself fit. A prolonged sedentary lifestyle is an invitation to various ailments. Eat a balanced and nutritious diet to build up your immunity. Keep your stress and anxiety levels low. Monitor your weight, sugar, blood pressure and cholestrol levels. A healthy heart and body are a result of healthy lifestyle choices, which have become the need of the hour for everyone”, said Dr Rituparna Baruah.
