Data & AI take centre stage in education governance discussions at Mumbai roundtable

The Sterlite EdIndia Foundation on Thursday hosted the Data & AI for Education Governance Roundtable in Mumbai, bringing together senior leaders from municipal corporations, district administrations, education departments and leading education foundations to discuss how technology can strengthen education systems in India. Held at the Sterlite Electric Office in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the roundtable focused on improving student learning outcomes and strengthening administrative planning in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). Participants highlighted the growing need for insight-driven systems to improve planning, monitoring and evaluation across classrooms and institutions. The session was led by Sonakshi Agarwal, Managing Director of Sterlite EdIndia Foundation, and Antony Nellissery, Head of the Foundation, who emphasised building cohesive data ecosystems to support informed decision-making. “When public and private partners come together, we build scalable solutions whose impact continues long after the project ends,” Agarwal said.

Government representatives including Sujata Khare (MCGM), Mohit Patil (MBMC), Dr Pokdey Yomgam (Deputy Director of School Education, Namsai) and Dr Keshab Sarmah (District Planning Officer, Namsai) discussed how data and AI can enable targeted and equitable interventions across diverse education contexts.

Leaders from organisations such as Adhyayan Quality Education Foundation, Vipla Foundation, Pehlay Akshar and Dasra also shared insights on strengthening governance through data-driven planning and improved monitoring of learning outcomes, teacher deployment and attendance.

In Itanagar, education experts say the adoption of data analytics and AI-driven systems could significantly benefit education administration in Arunachal Pradesh. Officials noted that districts such as Namsai are already exploring data-based planning models that may gradually influence education governance practices across the Itanagar region, helping authorities track student performance and deploy resources more effectively. The roundtable concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between governments, foundations and system leaders to build transparent and scalable education systems that improve learning outcomes nationwide. Sterlite EdIndia Foundation works in teacher education, data analytics support and institutional strengthening of education systems as part of a CSR initiative incubated by Sterlite Electric, Resonia and Serentica.
