Delivery of “taragiri,” an indigenous advanced stealth frigate of the fourth Nilgiri class (project 17a)

Taragiri (Yard 12653), delivered to the Indian Navy on November 28, 2025, is the fourth ship of the Nilgiri Class (Project 17A) and the third constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd. This delivery signifies a crucial achievement in India’s self-reliance in warship design and construction. Taragiri is a modern reincarnation of the former INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served from May 16, 1980, to June 27, 2013, and represents a significant advancement in naval design, stealth, firepower, automation, and survivability, embodying the Aatmanirbharta initiative in warship building.

Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai, the P17A frigates demonstrate a notable enhancement in indigenous ship design and combat capability. Utilizing Integrated Construction philosophy, Taragiri was completed in 81 months, faster than the 93 months required for the first ship of the class, Nilgiri. The P17A vessels feature an advanced weapon and sensor suite, including BrahMos Supersonic Missile (SSM), MFSTAR and MRSAM systems, along with a 76mm SRGM and close-in weapon systems.

The ships are powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, featuring a diesel engine and gas turbine driving a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP), complementing an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). The construction of Taragiri reflects India’s engineering and shipbuilding capabilities, with 75% indigenisation that has engaged over 200 MSMEs, generating approximately 4,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs. The delivery of Taragiri marks the fourth P17A ship in the last 11 months, with three more set for progressive delivery by August 2026.
