Emergency response activated after landslide cuts ff NH 415

A massive landslide early this morning has disrupted the Holongi-Itanagar stretch of National Highway 415, trapping several vehicles in mud and debris. The landslide, triggered by heavy and incessant rains, has cut off a vital communication link to Donyi Polo Airport and the state of Assam. Papum Pare district’s administration and highway department have deployed two JCBs and other machinery to clear the debris and restore traffic. However, the persistent problem of illegal earth cutting has exacerbated the situation. Despite repeated warnings from the administration, residents continue this unscientific practice, leading to frequent landslides during the monsoon season.

“This route faces multiple landslides every year, resulting in numerous roadblocks,” noted a local resident. The 14 km Holongi-Itanagar stretch, a crucial link between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, has become a hotspot for such disasters. Today, hundreds of cars and two-wheelers were stranded, causing significant disruption. Continuous downpours over the past few days have triggered landslides and floods across several districts in Arunachal Pradesh. The disaster management department has issued directives to all district commissioners and residents to remain vigilant and prepared for emergencies. NH 415 serves as the state capital’s second major route after NH 15, which connects Banderdewa, Naharlagun, and Itanagar.

The Karsingsa block point on NH 15 is also experiencing severe landslide issues. In 2022, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) awarded Bharat Construction Pvt Ltd a project for slope stabilization, rock fall protection, and erosion control measures on this stretch. While the project is nearing completion, the construction agency faces significant challenges due to difficult terrain, unstable soil conditions, and adverse weather.
