Exclusive! Esha Deol: Diwali is not just cards and parties but also a chance to connect to the Lord
Not many know that actress Esha Deol is very spiritual in real life and that is the reason she thoroughly enjoyed being a part of a Times Music devotional music video ‘Sampoorna Diwali Aarti’ sung by Shreya Ghoshal.
In an interview with Bombay Times, Esha said, “Due to my upbringing, my dance and the cultural section of our country, spirituality is imbibed in us right from our childhood. Yes, I am very spiritual and the Diwali Laxmi Puja is something that I have always done. And now that I am a married woman, all of the Takhtani family comes together on Diwali for the puja and it’s something we look forward to all year. The puja music video was beautiful and shot really well. It was a small little team of the director and his two assistants who shot in my house. There was also a Pandit to guide me throughout the Puja.”
When asked what prompted her to do this video, Esha explains, “The video has a message. Diwali is not just about playing cards, going for parties and dressing up, but is also a chance to connect to the Lord, to Laxmi Maa and Ganesh Ji. Doing the Laxmi Puja is auspicious and I urge all the youngsters to participate. It’s only a seven minute Puja and it’s beautiful.”
Talking about the lockdown and being home bound for the last few months Esha says, “Well, the lockdown has been difficult for a lot of people, but it is something that we are sort of used to now. I am pretty much a home person. I try and do as much as possible from home. The only time I step out is when I am out with my kids or work, a shoot or a dance performance.”
A full-time mother, an author, an actress, Esha has been busy. She says, “I have recently done a film. This is something I am looking forward to. The shoot is luckily finished, the film is ready, so I am looking forward to the announcement soon. Now that my kids are a little settled, I am looking at scripts and I will be seen on and off doing what I love doing – acting in films. Films are my first love.”
Esha says, “My kids are still very young and we have been functioning pretty well from home. Getting the kids in a good routine has really helped. They have a time table set up where there is sleep time, eat time, play time, activity time. My elder daughter Aradhya has online classes. So kids keep me busy. Apart from that, I have been busy with my work. Just like this video, I did a couple of dance videos for Ganesh Chaturthi and before that, I was promoting my book ‘Amma Mia’. As far as my work goes, it’s kept me busy and motherhood has kept me on my toes.”
Esha’s mother, the legendary actress Hema Malini has made the most of lockdown by taking up the new profession of singing. Talking about her ever-active mother, Esha says, “My mother is someone who can’t sit idle and likes to keep reinventing herself. She is so used to working, whether it’s her acting, dance or her political profession. She is always on her toes and keeping her at home for eight months is quite a task because she needs to keep doing something creatively. She began doing singing classes with her teacher every day. She sings and learns music for an hour, hour and a half. And I think it’s nice to see her taking this up because she has got a beautiful voice, she has got the grace. She is an extremely spiritual person. I think it’s fantastic what Mamma is doing. She is the kind of person who will find a profession even in the lockdown and it’s something we all need to learn from and get inspired by. I see a lot of people getting bogged down and not knowing what to do but having her around is something that keeps us positive and going.”
