F. Rodingliana Says Mizoram Boosting Local Power Projects to Cut External Dependence

The Mizoram government spent Rs 685.93 crore to purchase electricity from external sources during the current financial year, Power Minister F. Rodingliana informed the state Assembly on March 11. The minister shared the information while replying to a question raised by K. Lalawmdawna of the Mizo National Front (MNF) during the Assembly session. He said the state still depends heavily on power supply from outside because its internal generation remains limited. According to the minister, Mizoram generated only about 41 million units of electricity from its own sources between January and December 2026. The power was produced mainly through hydroelectric and solar projects operating within the state. Rodingliana also informed the House that the government collected around Rs 245.33 crore as revenue from electricity consumers during the same period.

However, he pointed out that the amount spent on buying power from outside sources was much higher than the revenue collected from consumers. Despite the gap between expenditure and revenue, the minister said the state has been able to manage its financial obligations. He added that the government has maintained a clean balance sheet and has cleared its debts related to electricity procurement. Officials told the Assembly that the government is working to reduce dependence on external power supply by increasing local generation capacity. As part of these efforts, Chief Minister Lalduhoma laid the foundation stone in January for the Tuirini small hydropower project in Aizawl district. The project, which will cost Rs 76.98 crore, is expected to generate 24 megawatts of electricity after completion.

The government is also planning larger projects to strengthen power production in the state. The Detailed Project Report for the proposed 132 MW Tuivai hydroelectric project in Saitual district, near the Manipur border, has already been completed.
