Police in Arunachal Pradesh have arrested five individuals in connection with the alleged confinement and rape of a 13-year-old girl in the Gandhi Market area of Daporijo. The accused have been identified as Bai Kaji, Tapong Baring, Raju Lomdak, Jepu Leya alias Jack Sorum, and Nanesh Nayam.
According to Daporijo Superintendent of Police Thutan Jamba, the minor was held captive and raped for five days before her ordeal came to light following a complaint filed by her sister on July 28. Authorities swiftly registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Daporijo police station.
The police successfully rescued the victim, who has since undergone a medical examination and been reunited with her family. The five accused, initially placed under police remand, are now in judicial custody. One of the prime suspects was apprehended on the day the FIR was lodged, while the others were arrested on July 29. Police have urged the public to report similar incidents promptly, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance. The timely intervention by law enforcement has brought some relief to the victim and her family as they seek justice.
In an unrelated incident, the Indian Medical Association’s Arunachal Pradesh Branch (IMA-AP) has expressed deep concern over the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata. The association announced a 24-hour shutdown of all non-essential medical services across the state on August 17 to protest the government’s handling of the case.
