Five people from West Bengal died in Mizoram mine collapse

Five people from Bengal were among those killed in a stone quarry collapse in South Mizoram’s Hanthial on Monday. 12 people are expected to die in this incident. BSF has recovered eight bodies so far. One victim is a resident of Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas, while the others are from Tehatta in Nadia.

The Tehatta victims – Madan Das (26)of Pipragachi in Chapra, Mintu Mondal (22), Rakesh Biswas (21) and Buddhadev Mondal (25) of Kalitlapara in Tehatta – had gone to work as laborers in Mizoram through a private agency about eight days ago. The name of the fifth victim is Subrata Raptan (24). He is a resident of Dholkhali Khulna in Sandeshkhali. The agency informed Madan’s family that they will take his body to Dumdum airport. Trinamool MLA Rukbanur Rahman went to their house on Tuesday evening. Tapas Kumar Pal, inspector-in-charge of Tehatta police station, said that all the victims were youths and members of poor families.

The administration is taking steps to bring Raptan’s body to his home. “We have spoken to the administrative authorities in Mizoram. We will help the bereaved family,” said Basirhat SP Joby Thomas.
