This year’s monsoon floods have claimed the lives of 75 people. Although the flood situation in the state has eased somewhat, bodies are now being recovered one after another as the water recedes. With the recovery of 7 more bodies in Sivasagar district recently, the death toll in this flood tragedy has risen to 75.
According to information shared by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), all 7 bodies recovered in the last 24 hours were from Sivasagar district. As a result, the number of deaths due to the current year’s floods has gone up to 75.
At present, 7 districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Kamrup Metropolitan are still affected by floods. Although the number of flood-hit districts has decreased compared to earlier, normal life in several areas continues to be disrupted.
The authority stated that 3,32,639 people across the state are currently affected by the floods. With 622 villages under 21 revenue circles still submerged, thousands of families are facing severe crises in terms of shelter, livelihood and daily life.
In addition, around 45,341.98 hectares of agricultural land remain under floodwater, causing massive damage to the agriculture sector. Farmers are particularly facing crop loss as well as prolonged waterlogging.
ASDMA further stated that there is currently no urban flooding situation in any city area of the state. Meanwhile, district administrations are continuing rescue, relief and rehabilitation work. Supply of relief materials, restoration of essential services, and assistance to flood-affected families in the affected areas are ongoing.
