Four accused in connection with a viral video released on Wednesday have been arrested

The Manipur police on Wednesday arrested another accused in connection with a viral video that showed two women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob in conflict-torn Manipur. The four accused who were arrested on Thursday in this case have been sent to 11-day police custody. The fifth accused has been identified as 19-year-old Yumlembam Nungsithoi Meteike, police said

Two women were paraded naked and molested in Manipur’s Kangpokpi and the incident sparked outrage across the country and Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session. The Manipur government has appealed to the people not to believe rumours. A “rumour free” helpline number – 923335522822 has been issued. The state government has urged people to return looted arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or the nearest security forces. Fresh violence broke out in Imphal when women protesters blocked both sides of a main road in the Ghari area, according to news sources. Women protestors burnt tires during the protest urging police to take action, it reported. Proceedings of both houses of Parliament have been stalled since the monsoon session began on July 20 due to protests by opposition parties over the situation in communal violence-hit Manipur and a May 4 video of two women parading naked in the state.
