A 23-year-old man, H. Lalrohlua from Hrangchalkawn, Lunglei, was arrested in Aizawl on November 9 for a scheme in which he redirected payments to his personal account at a Mizofed petrol pump. Lalrohlua, currently residing in Aizawl’s Armed Veng area, allegedly replaced the petrol pump’s original QR code with his own, scamming customers who paid via G-Pay. The fraudulent activity came to light after CCTV footage captured Lalrohlua swapping the QR codes, and the video quickly went viral on social media.
Transactions from his G-Pay account revealed payments from multiple customers, with amounts including Rs. 1000, Rs. 425, and Rs. 890, matching fuel purchases made at the pump.Petrol pump employees grew suspicious after noticing a lack of payment confirmation alerts. “There was no credit alert from G-Pay,” a staff member recounted. The scheme unraveled after a customer noticed an unfamiliar name on their G-Pay receipt, prompting station manager Rohimliana (Chatea) to investigate by making a small payment himself. Upon confirming the fraud, he reported Lalrohlua to the police.
Following the report, Lalrohlua was taken into custody, and his phone was seized. Although he attempted to refund some payments, he had already pocketed a substantial amount. Police confirmed that he has no prior criminal record and remains in custody, pending formal charges.
