Germany Launches $1 Billion Green Ammonia Partnership with UAE

Germany and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have formalized a $1 billion Strategic Green Ammonia Partnership aimed at securing Germany’s long-term supply of carbon-neutral hydrogen carriers. The joint venture will focus on scaling up the production of Green Ammonia (a carrier for hydrogen produced using renewable energy) in the UAE, utilizing its abundant solar resources.

The agreement includes significant German investment in electrolysis and ammonia synthesis plants in Abu Dhabi. The first shipments of Green Ammonia are slated to arrive in German ports by late 2027, where specialized terminals are being constructed to reconvert the ammonia back into pure hydrogen for industrial and transport use.

This partnership is critical for Germany, which is rapidly seeking alternatives to fossil fuels to meet its industrial decarbonization targets. For the UAE, it represents a strategic pivot, leveraging its energy infrastructure to become a major exporter in the emerging global hydrogen economy.

Experts note the deal highlights the critical role of international partnerships in establishing a viable global supply chain for clean energy, especially for energy-intensive sectors like steel and chemicals in Europe.
