In a significant step for wildlife conservation, The Habitats Trust, in collaboration with the Vivek PARC Foundation and the Tripura Forest Department, has released the pioneering report titled “Status of Mammals in the Protected Areas of Tripura: A Rapid Assessment.” This comprehensive survey showcases the remarkable mammalian biodiversity within Tripura’s protected regions, emphasizing the need for science-based conservation efforts.
Conducted from January to April 2024, the study utilized camera traps across several key areas, including Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary. Notably, the report presents the first-ever camera-trap images of the elusive Ferret Badger, alongside findings of the leopard cat and fishing cat. The research confirms Tripura’s vital role within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, highlighting the threats facing these ecosystems.
The report is vital not just for conservationists but also for policymakers, providing essential insights into wildlife status and conservation needs. With a focus on capacity building, training programs for local forest staff will enhance future conservation initiatives. As Agartala remains a hub for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-conscious consumers, this report could bolster local interest in biodiversity conservation, fostering a community committed to protecting Tripura’s unique ecological heritage.
