Guwahati’s Birla Fertility achieves rare success using advanced Micro-TESE technology

Birla Fertility & IVF Guwahati has achieved a rare medical breakthrough in treating severe male infertility, successfully retrieving viable sperm in a case of non-obstructive azoospermia with extremely low testicular volume. The centre employed advanced microscopic technology for Micro-TESE (Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction), allowing precise detection of rare sperm pockets within testicular tissue.

The patient, a 39-year-old male with severe testicular failure and cardiac complications, had struggled to conceive for six years and was advised donor semen at multiple clinics. Led by Dr. Kalpana Jain, the multidisciplinary team included Dr. Rimpy Moni Baruah, urologists Dr. Chandan Phukan and Dr. Sauvik Dey, and embryologist Mr. Achal Tiwari. The team successfully retrieved 15–20 viable sperms, preserved using a state-of-the-art sperm vitrification device (Sperm VD) for future embryo transfer.

“This case highlights the power of advanced technology combined with precise microsurgical techniques,” said Dr. Kalpana Jain. “Couples now have a chance to conceive with self gametes even in the most severe cases.” Fertility services are witnessing rising demand for advanced treatments like Micro-TESE, as local patients increasingly seek world-class procedures closer to home, reducing the need to travel to metropolitan centres for complex infertility solutions. Birla Fertility & IVF, part of CK Birla Healthcare, continues to expand its network across Northeast India, delivering high-standard fertility care with cutting-edge technology and multidisciplinary support.
