A heartbreaking incident unfolded on October 18 in the Kalidas Para area of Nagichhara, where two children drowned in a pond, leading to their untimely deaths. The victims have been identified as Pinki Das, aged 9, and Urmila Marak, aged 10.
According to police sources, the children were playing near the pond when the tragedy struck. “Local residents discovered the two children lying unresponsive in the water and immediately alerted the Fire and Emergency department,” a police spokesperson stated. Firefighters promptly rushed to the scene, rescuing the children and transporting them to Ananda Nagar Primary Health Centre. Unfortunately, both were declared dead on arrival by the attending doctor.
Urmila Marak’s father, Rajen Marak, a mason by trade, expressed his profound grief at the hospital. He shared that his family hails from Kailashahar in Unakoti District but had moved to Nagichhara for work. “I last saw my daughter playing in the area before I left for work that morning. I received the devastating news by noon, but I still do not understand how this happened,” he said.
Local reports indicate that three children were involved in the incident. While one child managed to climb out of the pond and return home, Pinki and Urmila could not be saved.
