Hero MotoCorp has achieved a significant milestone in sustainability. All eight of its facilities in India, including six manufacturing plants, have been certified as ‘Zero-Waste-to-Landfill’ (ZWL) by M/s Intertek India Pvt. Limited. The announcement was made on World Environment Day by Niranjan Gupta, CEO of Hero MotoCorp.”Sustainability is integral to our operations,” Gupta stated. “Our zero-waste-to-landfill policy reflects our commitment to the environment alongside delivering quality and fuel-efficient products.”
Hero MotoCorp’s ZWL initiative addresses India’s ongoing challenges with solid waste management. Gupta highlighted the detrimental impacts of overflowing landfills in mega cities, which pose health risks and environmental threats. “As an industry leader, we aimed to set a precedent by achieving zero waste-to-landfill status, leading by example,” he added.The initiative began in 2018-19 at the Neemrana facility in Rajasthan, reducing waste by 40% and achieving a 99.9% diversion rate across all plants ahead of the 2025 target. Key innovations include a water-based painting system and robotic painting processes, which have minimized hazardous waste and increased efficiency.
Sunil B. Medge, Regional Manager at Intertek India, praised Hero MotoCorp’s efforts, noting the company’s success in waste segregation, reusable packaging, and upcycling. “Hero has transformed grinding sludge into Ferric Alum, useful in textiles and water treatment,” Medge remarked.Hero MotoCorp’s commitment to sustainability spans its facilities in Haryana, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. This holistic approach ensures the production of over six million units annually while maintaining environmental responsibility.
