IIT-Bombay gets Rs 160 crore from anonymous donor

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has received a donation of US$ 18.6 million from alumni to establish a green energy and sustainability research hub, the premier institute said on Thursday.
IIT B, however, did not reveal the identity of the former student, saying he wanted to remain anonymous.
The contribution will redefine the Institute’s role in tackling the global climate crisis. The hub will be located within a state-of-the-art academic building at the IIT Bombay campus in suburban Pavai and its focus will extend to critically important areas, the institute said in a statement.

Areas of focus include climate risk assessment and effective mitigation strategies, climate change adaptation, and comprehensive environmental monitoring, it said.

Additionally, the Hub seeks to promote the advancement of climate solutions, renewable energy sources and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies. It will facilitate research in key areas including battery technology, biofuels, clean-air science, solar photovoltaics, flood forecasting and carbon capture, the statement said.

The research center will also offer industry-relevant educational training and develop strategic collaborations with universities and corporations worldwide, it said.

Prof. Subhashis Chowdhury, the Director of IIT Bombay, said, “The establishment of this hub underscores our dedication to addressing climate challenges through cutting-edge research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and nurturing entrepreneurial endeavors.” It is proof of the impact that combined efforts such as green energy and sustainability research can achieve in creating a sustainable path for the future, he said.

“It is a rare occurrence in Indian academia that a philanthropist wants to remain anonymous,” added Mr Chowdhury.
