IIT Hyderabad student dies by suicide due to mental stress

A 21-year-old post-graduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad committed suicide in her hostel room, police said.

This incident happened on Monday night.

The woman, Mamita Naik, joined the institute on July 27 to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering at IIT Hyderabad. But within two weeks of joining the institute, the woman took extreme steps.

Two suicide notes were recovered – one written in Odia and the other in English. The note mentioned that the woman was under severe stress and no one should be held responsible for her death.

The body has been shifted to Sangareddy Government Hospital for post-mortem. A case will be filed and further investigation will be conducted.

This is the second suicide in the last three weeks, since a B. Tech student went missing on July 17. His body was later found on a beach in Visakhapatnam and was identified by his parents on 25 July.
