The Assam border along the India-Bhutan border gates at Samdrup Dzhongkhar and Gelphu will be reopened for tourists on September 23 for the first time since the Covid-19 outbreak.
After a gap of two and a half years, a Bhutanese delegation led by Tashi Penjor, Himalayan State Director (Law and Order) of the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs held a meeting with Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) officials here on Wednesday and announced that the gates would be reopened.
Panjore said, As the Covid-19 situation improves, the Bhutanese government has announced from September 23, the reopening of its borders for business, trade and official transit, provided the pandemic situation does not worsen.
Bhutan government plans eco-tourism, bird watching and other packages for visitors. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been developed to facilitate the smooth movement of travellers.
Officials appealed to tourists to bring their voter ID cards and other relevant documents while they come to visit the Himalayan nation.
Besides BTC officials, district commissioners and superintendents of police of Kokrajhar, Baksa Udalguri and Chirang were also present at the meeting held at the BTC secretariat here.
